Erasmus and Exchange Students

With the support of the European Commission through the Erasmus+ Programme the University of Crete has over 300 Erasmus exchange places for students from partner universities across Europe.

Before applying to the University of Crete as an Erasmus student, you need to be nominated by your home university.

Please check with your study advisor or Erasmus/International Office at your home university to see if there is an agreement with the University of Crete in your subject area.

Each Inter-Institutional agreement specifies the number of students who can participate, their level (undergraduate &/or postgraduate), and the period /duration of the exchange visit.

See Applications / Admissions Procedures.

Apart from the Erasmus+ programme there are some other opportunities at the University of Crete through specific educational and exchange agreements for studies, placements in labs or clinical clerkships. Check with your study advisor or International Office at your home university or contact us for information on exchange programs in your field of study.

What Can I Study

Places are available for study courses or (in some Departments) placements in labs or clinical clerkships.

The courses available to exchange students can be found on the Erasmus exchange agreement that exists between the two Institutions (Home and Host University)

Course guides and information on other academic matters can be found in the University's Departmental websites

Credits and transcripts

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) helps students to keep track of their achievements and makes sure that an Erasmus exchange counts towards one’s degree.

A full-time student can expect a normal academic workload of 30 ECTS credits in a single semester and 60 ECTS credits over a complete academic year. The credits allocated to courses and therefore the number of courses a student can take, may vary.

Course guides and ECTS information can be obtained from theUniversity's Departmental websites &/or from the ErasmusDepartmental Coordinators.

Courses taken and results achieved will be listed on the student’s Academic Transcript. All students receive a copy of their Transcript of Records on completion of their studies; a copy is also sent to the home university.

Languages

Greek is the official language of instruction.

Depending on the course and class size, special arrangements for instruction in English may be possible for Erasmus+ students (to be discussed with each course coordinator). However, in most cases, taught courses are offered in Greek.  Students, who do not speak Greek, receive tutoring, supervision and in some Acad. Departments an examination in the English language. Alternatively, students can carry our related work under academic supervision.

  • You can see the required language level for the Departments of Rethymnon campus here.
  • In Heraklion, the School of Science & Engineering offers a variety of BA and MsC courses for Erasmus students in English* specific arrangements are made in collaboration with the Erasmus Acad. coordinator of each Dept.
  • The School of Medicine requires Greek language (level B2) to attend courses and a high command of English* for clinical clerkships in the University Hospital. Therefore, students applying in the School of Medicine are strongly advised to only apply for clinical clerkships.

*a certified B2 level of knowledge is required

Modern Greek Language Courses

The University of Crete as part of its international orientation offers a Greek language course, elementary, intermediate and advance, in both Campuses.

The Greek language courses in Rethymnon and Heraklion are organized for Erasmus+ students free of charge.

A small fee is charged to researchers in affiliated Institutions (FORTH, IMBBC, etc.)

For information please check here https://en.uoc.gr/studies-at-uni/greek-language.html

Accommodation

The University of Crete has no accommodation on campus for the general student population.

The International Relations Office (IRO) advises and assists exchange students in finding accommodation at reasonable prices, in hostels or private apartments. Be sure to send your application in time to the relevant IRO contact person and state clearly your dates of arrival and departure.

The local ESN can also help you find accommodation, as they have an updated database of accommodation options for Erasmus students.

Note

  • On arrival - all students should be prepared to pay one month's rent in advance and a deposit equivalent to one month's rent
  • Rent agreements do not usually include utilities bills (electricity, water, telephone)
  • Furnished apartments are not usually provided with bed linen or towels
