FANGYU QU'S ERASMUS EXPERIENCE

International Credit Mobility (ICM), KA107 2020-2023
Traineeship, Department of Preschool Education,
FANGYU QU

Spring Semester 2022 (7.2.2022-22.7.2022)

My experience at the University of Crete is perfect and unforgettable which is far more than I have expected. The Erasmus group is like a big family. Everyone is so nice, friendly, and helpful. The city is full of sunshine, friendly Greek people, and lots of events to join. I enjoyed a lot at the beaches, the hiking routes, and some road trips with my friends here. Besides, the staff in the International Office are super nice, who helped me and gave me a lot of care all the way when I needed them. My responsible professor Marina is also a very cute and charming person. I learned a lot from her. I am really happy that I made my choice to come here and met so many wonderful people.

I am here for one-semester traineeship from Feb to July in the Department of Preschool Education. Due to my previous working experiences as a Chinese and English teacher before my Master’s Program, I found it worthwhile and essential to observe and draw references from each other. During my kindergarten observation here, some phenomena regarding teaching methods and pedagogies are so inspiring, for instance, the professional one-to-one guidance to children with behavior problems, the skills the English teacher used to lure the children to speak targeted English words, the play-based teaching strategy etc. Besides, the Greek lesson every week is a great way for me to keep in contact with most Erasmus students and promote my understanding in the kindergartens. In light of the entire traineeship, I also completed a program report and a paper about the comparative study of the early childhood education system in Greece and China. More importantly, I also set up the framework for my final thesis on Greek language education policy. I hope my thesis could add up the understanding of Greek education system for the Chinese research field and promote more research interests between the two countries.

Erasmus KA103 – Mobility between Programme Countries

This mobility project can comprise one or more of the following activities:

Student mobility:

Student mobility can be in any subject area/academic discipline. To ensure high-quality mobility activities with maximum impact on the students, the mobility activity has to be compatible with the student’s degree-related learning and personal development needs.

Students may carry out either one or a combination of the activities described below:

  • § a study period abroad at a partner higher education institution (HEI); The study period abroad must be part of the student's study programme to complete a degree at a short cycle, first cycle (Bachelor or equivalent), second cycle (Master or equivalent) and third or doctoral cycle.
  • · a traineeship (work placement) abroad in an enterprise or any other relevant workplace21 . Traineeships abroad at a workplace are supported during short cycle, first, second, third cycle studies and, in the case of mobility within Programme Countries, within a maximum of one year after the student’s graduation. Wherever possible, the traineeships should be an integrated part of the student's study programme.

Staff mobility:

  • § teaching periods: this activity allows HEI teaching staff or staff from enterprises to teach at a partner HEI abroad. Staff mobility for teaching can be in any subject area/academic discipline.
  • § training periods: this activity supports the professional development of HEI teaching and non-teaching staff in the form of training events abroad (excluding conferences) and job shadowing/observation periods/training at a partner HEI, or at another relevant organisation abroad. A period abroad can combine teaching and training activities.

In 2018, in the grant allocation for mobility of staff between Programme Countries, emphasis will be put on training periods for HEI teaching staff that allow them to develop pedagogical and curriculum design skills.

Erasmus KA107 - Mobility between Partner Countries

For 30 years, the European Union has funded the Erasmus programme which has enabled over 4 million European students to spend part of their studies in another higher education institution (HEI) in Europe. In 2015, Erasmus+ opened up these opportunities to individuals and organisations from other parts of the world. Through the new "International Credit Mobility" action - ICM for short - European HEIs can now set up mobility agreements with partners around the world, to send and receive students and staff.

What's in it for individuals? ICM projects aim to help participants acquire key skills, support their professional development and deepen their understanding of other cultures.

The Erasmus Impact Study1 finds that taking part in Erasmus+ is likely to boost a graduate's employability and transversal skills. Unemployment rates among Erasmus participants are 23% lower 5 years after graduation compared to those who did not go abroad. Two-thirds of employers think that international experience is a key asset for job candidates and leads to greater professional responsibility. Staff can acquire new competences for their professional development, improve their language skills and learn about new working methods.

  • What's in it for institutions? ICM aims to increase the capacities, attractiveness and international dimension of the organisations taking part. International ties between institutions will be strengthened, giving the partners the opportunity to increase their visibility at local and global levels. Both incoming and outgoing students will be ready to share their positive experiences of studying at your institution.
