Press release: Welcome Day for International Students in Heraklion

The University of Crete welcomed the new Erasmus students of the winter semester 2023 on Friday the 22nd of September in Voutes Campus, Heraklion!

Students first gathered at the offices of the International & Public Relations Department in Heraklion where they had the opportunity to meet each other, the international officers in Heraklion and Nora the Erasmus dog, who was recently rescued and is temporarily hosted in our offices until she finds her forever home!

Erasmus students received their Erasmus souvenirs & important information about the services provided by the International & Public Relations Department, their Erasmus studies and stay in the University of Crete & Heraklion, and finally they were guided to the main event at N. Petridis Amphitheatre of the UoC Department of Mathematics & Applied Mathematics, organized by the UoC Welcome Office, where they joined other international students of the UoC Postgraduate and Graduate programs offered in English and PhD students.  

During the event, Prof. Georgios M. Kontakis, Rector of the University of Crete, and Prof. Georgios Kossioris, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs, Lifelong Learning, International Relations & Outlook, addressed new students and made special reference to the importance of international collaborations and diversity in the University community, expressing their commitment to internationalization and academic excellence. The event proceeded with detailed presentations about the services and facilities of the University of Crete and concluded with a reception. Students also had the opportunity to enjoy a campus tour by the members of the Erasmus Students Network and meet the members of the UoC astronomy group, who installed a telescope and invited them to observe the sun via special filters!

We would like to thank the UoC Welcome Office, the Info Point of the Municipality of Heraklion for the folders they provided to Erasmus students, including tourist information about Heraklion and the island of Crete, the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) in Heraklion, the UoC astronomy group, the UoC authorities, students, staff and everyone else who contributed to this beautiful welcome event!
